Understanding Google Search Indexing

So many of my clients ask me about being found in Google with out paying for placement. This is referred to as being found naturally or organically. Being found in Google or other search engines is not as simple as putting up a web site. You have to think about how search engines work. They crawl through sites indexing the pages looking at the frequency of words, links and how often the site is updated. This is a rather simple explanation, I will begin to clarify how this process works. Search engines like Google have rules about how they work and what they consider to be fair. Google stands by their principles and last week according to an article I found on newsfactormagazine, Google Delisted a major company from their search index. ( View the story )

My purpose in sharing this story with you, is to encourage you to explore how you can be found in Google, however be aware of those organizations that say they can get you to the top. Ask them about the rules. Talk to their past clients about how they work. Search the news archives for stories on their company. Take a little time to understand how it works.

We all want to be found on the web but it is important to understand what goes into this process.

If you have had any experience with this area please share your comments.

Jennifer:

Thanks for bringing up such a great topic!

Search Enging Optimization or SEO, is a tricky animal and best left to the experts.

A prime example of how well-meaning business-owners get Google SEO backwards is packing their meta tags chock full of keywords and then having all graphics and virtually no optimized text on the page they want to show up in Google. Classic error.

I hope your blog starts a dialogue about this because SEO is one of the parties to which small businesses were (unfortunately) not invited.
